KOREA
Unless you have been living in a cave or underground, you would have known that in recent years, the
Hallyu wave has taken the world by storm. Korea is now one of the most popular travel destinations in Asia as its rich history, scenic landscapes and exciting Kpop scene have proved to be a a killer combination in attracting curious travellers!
If you are a die-hard Kpop and Kdrama fan like me, Korea must definitely be one of the countries on your travel radar list. Oh how I wish I could bump into Kpop idols and actors as I walk along the streets of Dongdaemun or Myeongdong!
Wouldn't it also be lovely if concert stops were included in tour itineries? :P
Idols aside, Korea is also famed for its scenic landscapes shown in their dramas. Jeju island is probably the most notable example, which is also known as the "
Hawaii of Korea". It is a World Heritage site, and remains one of the most popular attractions for locals and tourists alike. There is a plethora of activities that you can engage in here, ranging from catching sunrises and sunsets at gorgeous beaches to viewing majestic waterfalls and riding horses.
Korea is also a shopping paradise! Check out the markets where you can find clothes, accessories, jewellery and hair pins at much cheaper prices compared to those in retail stores! Famous shopping destinations include the Dongdaemun market and Namdaemun market. There are also markets catering to people with specific interests such as Insadong market where you can find everything traditional and Yongsan market for electronic goods!
For the historians at heart, the National Museum of Korea is a wonderful place to learn about Korea's history and culture. Also, you can visit the Changdeokgung palace which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
And now we come to food! Sampling a country's local cuisine is definitely one of the MUST-DOS when travelling overseas. Otherwise, you can consider your trip a wasted one if you stick to eating the same type of food that you are comfortable with. In Korea, meals are usually served with a variety of side dishes such as kimchi, egg custard and salad. Be adventurous and try out all of them! Also, try your hand at barbecuing meat and have a shot of soju to match the food! If you are travelling during the winter season, the ginseng chicken will be sure to warm your insides and provide you with the energy to last the day.
Now, don't you just want to hop on board a plane to Korea? :D
